Zombies Among Us

Abstract

Yeah, probably is.

Do they walk among us,
lurking in plain sight,
caring not about wrong,
uncomplicated by right?

Do they sit at our tables,
next to us in schools,
talk to us on TV,
convinced we're all fools?

Do they have no soul?
Are their hearts cold as ice?
Are they caring as a rock?
Is their conscience full of mice?

Is their god their belly?
Are you nothing but a meal?
Would they suck you dry,
and devour you with zeal?

They who see,
but they who are blind.
They who talk,
but not from their mind.

Dead to the plight of fellow men.
Dead to the misery of others.
Dead to hunger and loss of home.
Dead to need in their brothers.

Every day there is a reason,
why others they can't help.
"They're not at all like us,"
in unison they yelp.

"They're a different color,
they have a different way,
they might be evil,
So we'll keep them at bay."

"They're not God's perfect.
They are only half human.
Our god cares not for them.
They're only our stew, men."

"We made our own home,
we raised our own income,
let them do the same,
we'll give them not a crumb."

They who can see,
but they who are blind.
They who can grunt,
but not from their mind.

Dead to the plight of fellow men.
Dead to the misery of others.
Dead to hunger and loss of home.
Dead to need in their brothers.

The zombies among us,
their souls filled with fungus,
their hearts filled with lice,
who feed on those among us.

Their god is their belly.
You are nothing but a meal.
They would suck you dry,
and devour you with zeal?

Those zombies for whom
any excuse will do,
to ignore the plight of others,
and take away their due.
